Creating Magic Out of Fear

BOO. Eep, did I scare you?

Hope so, cuz Halloween is fast approaching and so are the spooky feels: terror, fright, panic, YOU NAME IT. A lot of us are SO down to get skerred right now.

BUT OMG, do these feelings ever creep in when you think of the things on your bucket list? Jumping out of an airplane, living in another country, starting a business, EEK.

I for one ALWAYS feel the fright flood into my body when I think of pursuing my biggest, baddest dreams. Ever feel the same?

Then I’ve got a dare for you.

Scratch that. A triple dog dare.

FOLLOW your fear. (Yeah, yeah follow your dreams, follow your passion, but MOST OF ALL, follow your FEAR).

No, don’t go chasing poisonous spiders (if you know me, you’ll know that’s probably my worst nightmare and why I’ve got Amazon jungle PTSD).

But your FEAR is your soul’s COMPASS. It’s like a GPS for where you desperately want to go, but are too SCARED to.

We’re scared we’re not ready, we’re scared we won’t have enough money, or food (totally me), or resources, we’re scared we’ll get rejected, criticized, or just COMPLETELY fail.

But here’s three steps to make MAGIC out of your fear instead of letting it paralyze you.

Magic? Little witchy, no? Hehe, well it’s Halloween season isn’t it?

But yes, for reals. MAGIC. Here goes:

  1. Write down your #1 desire and your #1 biggest fear in life. And if you feel like getting extra credit, #2 and #3. Do they relate to each other? If so, how? If not, keep writing and dig deeper until you can see a clear connection.

  2. Notice where your fear is holding you back. What thoughts, ideas, or actions trigger a sense of panic? The idea of starting something new, going somewhere new, meeting someone new…any chance you could step into that fear today? How?

  3. Make the fear in your body a physical shape and color and let it congregate in one area (i.e. chest, head, stomach). How does it feel? Congested, suffocating, maybe even safe? After a few minutes of feeling your fear intensely, let it melt off your shoulders or down your legs. This may bring enormous release. And releasing that fear can give you permission to go after your biggest, baddest dreams NOW.

Fear is always on our minds, but it’s what we do with it that matters. Nelson Mandela famously said, “May your choices reflect your hopes not your fears.” But in this case…maybe you can flip the message a bit and make choices BECAUSE you are afraid of them!

And all of this is just a scratch on the surface when it comes to converting fear into real-life MAGIC and RESULTS.
