Yesterday, Angelo and I were walking over to the waterfront to see the 4th of July fireworks on the Hudson River for the first time.
When we arrived, we realized there was a space for us to squeeze in on top of some staircase steps that elevate above the crowd so we asked the lady next to it if someone was sitting there.
She said, "Nope! But it's wet!" It looked more damp than wet, so we shrugged, said we didn't mind, and sat our tushes down in anticipation.
Right when the clock hit 9:30pm, we noticed a flare start to ascend by the World Trade Center so I whipped out my phone to catch the very beginning. BOOM! The first pop of glitter in the sky had us breathless.
The sheer joy in the crowd was palpable and it was all so mesmerizing, but after recording for about a minute, I thought to myself, "This'll look a lot better if I take it in with my own eyes..."
So I laid my phone down and watched the whole night sky light up before me...even more mesmerized, pupils full of glory.
Were there other moments when I wanted to pick up my phone and press record again during the 20-minute display? Sure! And I did a few times!
But that moment of remembering that my eyes were better than anything my phone could capture brought me to a deep sense of bliss and at one point, I felt tears well up at the magnificence of it all.
There are so many moments that I'm happy I captured this holiday weekend: singing old school reggaeton lyrics at a perreo party with friends, taking photos with my newfound Mexican cousins as we explored Summit One, the NYC view from a stationed floating boat in the harbor, and still...
The best view is always the one you take in with your own eyes, your stillness, your deep focus and presence.
