Yesterday, I was at a co-working space in the city sitting across from my friend and while I was writing this email, I started getting all sweaty thinking about something that makes me a little mad...
Something that holds a lot of people back, especially women...
Something that can keep you stuck for months, years, or even decades...
Can you guess what it is?
OVERTHINKING.
When was the last time you did this? After a difficult conversation with someone you love? After pressing send on an email that feels important to you? After deciding what your new offer is then pitching it for the first time?
Because overthinking isn't always all negative. It can show us where our heart lies. It can show us what we most care about.
What makes me upset is when I see perfectly capable people staying in the loop of overthinking for a little too long because it feels safe, somehow...almost like a protection.
It can feel productive, even though we all know it's not. Really though, what has overthinking done for you? Where has it gotten you? Thinking seconds or minutes before you do something maybe yes, but for an hour? Hell no!
Maybe you jump between business ideas, not because you're unsure of what to choose, but because you're scared that whatever option you pick might limit you or never measure up to the grandeur of your dreams and ideas. You could do this, that, and the other thing, but picking one for now could be the freedom you actually need.
Maybe you overthink the way you're gonna market something because you don't wanna do the sometimes uncomfortable, yet simple and effective work that can bring results. Directly asking someone to hire you, for example, might be quicker and easier than hoping they'll see your last reel and reach out.
Or maybe you're overthinking because you're having a hard time being honest with someone you love or even yourself. We try to twist our thoughts to try to make sense of another person when sometimes, all we really need is a gentle, loving, honest conversation with them. After that, the thoughts could magically vanish.
Because when you're overthinking, your soul really wants to expend that energy to do something about them. Anything. You could flip a coin, play eeny-meeny-miny-moe, or throw darts to decide what that is. Truly.
That's so much better than drowning in thoughts and indecision, thinking way too much about what to do versus actually doing something with those thoughts.
When an entrepreneur asks me things like, "Should I work with women? Should I do workshops? Should I teach about money or pleasure?", I secretly think to myself...too many questions! Not enough action!
Undercomplicate and underthink it. Those are two words that have been coming out of my mouth more often than normal when I've been talking to clients recently.
Find a way to take clear steps now because your dreams, emotions, and ideas don't go anywhere until you share it with someone.
There's no right or wrong way to do this! But doing ANYTHING is better than turning the wheels in your head about what you might do in the future.
Don't let another day pass by where you just think about what you're gonna do. What's one small thing you can do today?
