Right after my 30th birthday, I came across a concept that I had never thought about before...
It started with one of Susan Hyatt's emails (she's a coach, author, and mentor of mine) and this question: "Does joy exhaust you?"
I was intrigued and felt like she was reading my mind because after ten days of immense joy from my birthday shenanigans and hosting some of best friends, I was WIPED OUT.
I opened the email and this is what she had to say:
"When your body & mind are devoid of consistent joy, you will experience a wild rush of endorphins when you have fun and then a crash. Suddenly, you feel like you need a 'vacation from your vacation' or a nap. It’s similar to exercising. Let’s say you have a Peloton bike. You started out on a high note, but your bike has turned into a coat rack. One day, you decide to jump back on and after 30 minutes, you collapse, your muscles ache, you’re tired. Your recovery time is longer than usual because your body needs to acclimate to exercise once again.
The same thing happens with joy. You do something fun, like head to the beach with friends, soaking up the rays, then you come home hours later, completely knocked out because your mind & body are simply not used to having that much fun. But when you build more fun into your life - working that joy muscle - suddenly you need much less recovery time, until eventually, you don’t need to recover at all. Pure, unfiltered joy with no side effects. This week, make joy & fun a priority. Flex your joy. Build more and more of it into your life. Devour joy until it ENERGIZES and FUELS you. If fun makes you feel exhausted and you’re 'tired of being tired', you need more joy & pleasure in your daily life."
I started experimenting right after reading this, building in more and more fun into my daily life and building up what I call my joy stamina.
The results?
In the past 5 days alone, I went jet skiing around the Statue of Liberty, salsa danced on the beach to celebrate Angelo's birthday, got all dressed up to go to a super high-end French restaurant, took a trampoline dance class, read by the pool, napped (hehe), and this weekend I'm going to Six Flags with a group of friends. So. much. FUN.
